Exhibitionists: Art By Artists Who Curate

Walter’s 100 Church Street, Amsterdam, New York, 12010 August 5th - August 13th

Walter’s is psyched to reopen our 1,200-square-foot space inside the Walter Elwood Museum in Amsterdam, New York, on Saturday, August 5th. “Exhibitionists: Art By Artists Who Curate” brings together 20 artists who also run and curate galleries. A new zine publication for our shop is also being made for the exhibition by The Lust Resort - a series produced by upstate New York artists Kelsey Renko and John Desousa.

On Sunday, August 6th, Walter’s will host a screening of 4 video artists, with Johannes DeYoung, Trey Burns, Eileen Maxson, and Kris Pierce, curated by Bart Keijsers Koning. Bart Keijsers Koning is owner of Keijsers Koning in Dallas, TX.

Running an artist space is an act of passion and part fool, but the act is rewarded - creating a unique community within the community of the art world. By circumventing commercial structures, ideas can flourish or find their footing on their own merit. Artists who run galleries dedicate their time for the love of art and other artists, usually at a great sacrifice, to their own practice. We wanted to turn the gaze and curate a show that simultaneously looks at the output of these artists. We are also creating a network of artist-run spaces from different regions across the United States. Included in the exhibition with the spaces they operate:

Patrick Carlin Mohundro - P.A.D. New York, NY; Emily Janowick - Lonesome Dove, Queens, NY; Myles Starr - Louis Reed, New York, NY; Philip Hinge - Cat Box Contemporary / (RE)darkzone, Queens, NY; Matthew Williams - Invisible Genie Arts, Amarillo, TX; Kegan Hollis - Lasso Gallery, Amarillo, TX; Jessica Langley, Ben Kinsley - The Yard, Colorado Springs, CO; Catherine McTague, Arnela Mahmutovic, Berly Brown - Melrose House, Albany, NY; Brent Birnbaum - Walter’s, Amsterdam, NY; Matt Taber, Trang Tran, Nate Heiges - International Waters / International Objects, Brooklyn, NY; Tamara Johnson, Trey Burns - Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, Dallas TX; Anthony Discenza - lower_cavity - Holyoke, MA; Joshua Abelow Freddy, Harris, NY; Butt Johnson.

Brent Birnbaum opened Walter’s in July of 2021 in Amsterdam, NY, in the former Sanford Carpet Mills buildings. He has curated numerous exhibitions and spaces from a deconsecrated church in Hillsdale, NY, to a house and a yard in Rockaway Beach, NY, a glass kiosk inside the Amsterdam Mall, and Shakedown Street at Dead and Company shows. Walter’s shares the building as part of the Walter Elwood Museum, a sprawling cabinet of curiosities filled with over 25,000 objects.
