Paper Reality

Popel Coumou

April 1 – May 6, 2023

Opening Saturday April 1, 5-8 pm

Artist will be present on Gallery night April 19 part of the Dallas Art Fair Events

Keijsers Koning is excited to present the solo exhibition Paper Reality by Dutch artist Popel Coumou. The exhibition will feature her signature photographs that explore the perception of reality, light, shadow and form.

Popel’s photographs are driven by finding the parameters of each medium used and

pushing it past its confinement. It can be seen as an ongoing analysis of perception. Collaged layers of photographs of skies form the base for her photographs and in some of her works small clay sculptures allude to a sense of space through color and light. The viewer can see the fibers of the layers in paper. This honesty of the material allows the viewer to see beyond its inherent nature and appreciate where the forms take you.

In this exhibition we see two series come together as they address and deal with the theatrics of light. There are depictions of interior and light coming through windows, while the other series has still lifes built out of paper sets and clay flowers. The beauty is in the simplicity of the material that react to the light and space, allowing the viewer to question the perception of reality.

Popel Coumou is a Dutch photographer whose work has been collected and shown by Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Foam, Huis Marseille, Statoil, the Dutch Ministry, AkzoNobel and Dela. Recently her work is shown in her solo show in Fotomuseum Den Haag, in Art Centre Mechelen, Belgium and at Photo Dubai. Her work has been recognized through such prices as the Foam Talent, Somfy Photography Award, Meijburg Art Commission and she won the Hyères Photography competition. Her commissions include a catalogue for Hermes at Villa Poiret Mallet-Stevens @ADAGP, Hotel Mercure in the Hague, the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam and at his moment she is finishing a site-specific light work for the Amsterdam UMC Hospital.
