Shifting Grounds explores the fluid relationship between place, memory, and transformation through a series of watercolor works and mixed-media paintings on canvas. Created during Rush Baker’s time at the Grant Wood Colony in Iowa, these landscapes are both rooted and unsettled—shaped by history, shifting ecologies, and personal reflection. The watercolors capture fleeting impressions of the land, while the works on canvas incorporate a range of materials, layering textures and context to interrogate the landscape as both a physical space and a site of cultural memory.
