Keijsers Koning is pleased to assist the Estate of Charles Dee Mitchell, organized in collaboration with his collection manager Temple Shipley, in presenting a major art sale benefiting regional museums.
This significant sale from the estate of the late Charles Dee Mitchell will take place from May 9 through May 23, featuring approximately 300 artworks assembled over more than four decades of dedicated collecting. Mitchell’s collection reflects a deep engagement with Texas regional art, alongside contemporary works on paper, sculpture and photography.
Throughout his life, Mitchell championed artists’ practices and ideas through interviews, lectures, curatorial projects, and critical writing. The sale will be accompanied by a presentation of ephemera from his career as a critic, including publications featuring his work, offering further insight into his intellectual and artistic legacy.
Highlights from the collection include works by Robert Adams, Brian Belott, Eric Bainbridge, Carl Block, Richard Bozeman, Madeline Donahue, Austin Eddy, Joel Fisher, Lonnie Holley, Kevin McNamee-Tweed, Michael Schmidt, Jim Shaw, Allison Schulnik, Deb Sokolow, Richard Tuttle, and E.B. Watson.
For many years, Mitchell hosted a New Year’s Day gathering at his home in the Hollywood Hills, and later at his architect-designed residence in Lakewood. These occasions brought together artists, writers, and friends in an informal setting, where works from his collection were regularly rotated, allowing guests to engage with an ever-evolving installation throughout the home.
The public is invited to experience the collection as Mitchell lived with it—often acquiring works in pairs or trios, creating visual dialogues across artists and mediums. Visitors are encouraged to consider similar groupings, reflecting the collector’s intuitive and deeply personal approach. Many of the artists included in the sale are also represented in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, underscoring the depth and significance of Mitchell’s decades-long engagement with the field.
Many works in the sale are professionally framed and glazed, and the offering also includes several sculptures. The sale is designed to be accessible to a wide range of collectors, with many works priced under $1,000 and the majority available between $100 and $500.
Please note that proceeds from the sale will benefit a range of charitable organizations that Mitchell supported during his lifetime, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Amon Carter, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Artworks designated as gifts to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston are not included in this sale; announcements regarding those donations will be made later in the spring.
